Expert Services related to the revised Guidance on Exposure Scenarios for the Waste Life Stage

Background

REACH requires the emission and exposure assessment of substance over the entire lifecycle, including the waste phase. Most REACH actor are not familiar with processes of the waste stage. Emission factors and measured data of substance emissions from waste processes are not available in many cases.

Objectives and results

The project was to develop a methodology and information basis for the standardised exposure assessment of substances in the waste stage.

The developed method distinguishes between article wastes and wastes from mixtures and differentiates three disposal pathways: disposal of municipal waste, recycling of material streams and treatment of hazardous wastes. For each disposal pathway different scenarios and typical emission factors are describe.

The project results are integrated in the ECHA guidance on exposure assessment of the waste stage (R18).
