Recycling in the age of digitalization. Specific recycling targets for metals and plastics from small electrical appliances in the ElektroG: Regulatory Approaches

There are significant shortcomings in the current collection and recycling practice for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Germany. The European WEEE Directive and the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) regulate the handling and depollution of WEEE, but until now there have been no specific legal provisions for high-quality recycling. To maximise recycling quality, the collection rate needs to be increased, and differentiated,

material-specific separation and recycling rates need to be established. In the project, the existing legal framework has been analyzed in detail and policy recommendations have been derived aiming at an improved recycling of WEEE.
