The environmental transformation of E-Commerce: New challenges for the environmental policy promotion of sustainable consumption (FKZ: 3719 11 302 0)

This project analyzed the drivers and ecological implications of e-commerce and identified possible intervention mechanisms and instruments for environmental policy. For this purpose, both the status quo and various possible future scenarios were evaluated from an ecological point of view. Based on an in-depth analysis of the most relevant elements of e-commerce – logistics, shipping packaging, and returns management – three scenarios for possible future forms of the "e-commerce" system were developed. Based on these scenarios, a roadmap was developed with concrete approaches for different groups of actors to achieve a more ecological target state. Furthermore, an online guide was compiled to support online retailers in making their offerings more environmentally sustainable.
