Analysis of multi-use systems for packaging avoidance (FKZ: 3720 34 3050)

The aim of this project is to quantify the waste prevention potential of reusable packaging for various areas of application and to develop concrete approaches and effective measures for optimizing and upscaling existing reusable packaging systems and establishing reusable packaging systems in new areas of application. To this end, current areas of application and the market shares of reusable packaging are presented and an estimate of the waste prevention potential of reusable packaging in a wide variety of application areas is made. Existing barriers and challenges to the dissemination of existing reusable systems in the beverage sector and their potential for optimization are examined in detail. In addition, existing barriers and challenges to the implementation and upscaling of reusable packaging systems in new areas of application and concrete approaches to address and overcome these will be identified. Following that, suitable legal and non-legal measures to implement the identified approaches in practice will be developed. The project will culminate in an overall strategy to promote reusable packaging systems.
