Measures to record quantities and types of fishing gear waste from fisheries and aquaculture for high-quality recycling to implement DIRECTIVE (EU) 2019/904 (FKZ3722 33 303 0)

This research project is being carried out on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency. In the context of the obligations imposed by the Single-Use Plastics Directive ((EU) 2019/904) regarding an extended producer responsibility scheme for fishing gear containing plastic, the following outputs are developed:

  • An overview of the key players and especially manufacturers of fishing gear in Germany and abroad
  • A material flow model of fishing gear and waste from fishing gear in Germany
  • A proposal for a possible annual "minimum collection quota" for waste from fishing gear
  • A proposal for a practicable and sustainable treatment and recycling concept for fishing gear, as well as specific eco-design requirements for a durable and recyclable design of fishing gear

To further qualify the procedure and the results, the project is accompanied by an advisory board consisting of five experts with extensive experience in the fields of fishing gear production, fishing industry, port management, recycling technology, and environmental statistics.
